Vehicle and passenger safety post repair-In India

We need to change our mindset towards road safety and passenger safety and take it as a very serious and non-negotiable clause that needs to be met with. Programs that involve repaired vehicle safety assessment which includes the setting up of safety standards and parameters that need to be met with religiously or penalized if tampered with.

The Indian Auto industry does not hold a very good reputation when it comes to churning out highly sustainable vehicles especially the new hot models that have been released. These models score high on the aesthetic appeal but fare poorly in terms of safety. This was highlighted in the recent initiative undertaken by the government called the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program. This program managed to pinpoint the shortcomings of the newer models which accelerated the processing for revamping and introducing newer safer vehicles in the Indian Auto Industry.

This program is a laudable effort and, a kick-start to forging better vehicles in terms of safety. But it cannot be deemed as a fail-proof docket since there isn’t a mechanism that can comprehensively and intrusively measure the safety of a vehicle. Hence this program caters to only partial challenges and hence does not completely solve the safety glitches rampant in the auto industry. These safety glitches revolve around two factors- passenger safety and road safety.

The safety issues stem from various aspects like allowing the repair of vehicles by people who aren’t certified in this line of work and dismal lack in the standardization of safety parameters. Since these repairs are easily accessible anywhere in India there are a lot of vehicle owners opt it. Vehicles which are out of its warranty period and secondhand buyers prefer this the most.

These aspects are the leading cause of the staggering number of road mishaps exigent in our country. The spare parts which are substandard in quality are easily available at a much cheaper rate in comparison to the original spare parts that are available in the country. The prices of these substandard spares make them an enticing alternative to the buyers and make them ready to compromise on quality and safety.

More than private vehicles it is the commercial vehicles that are subjected to these substandard low-price repairs. This has led to the abysmal conditions of commercial vehicles such as fleet taxis, trucks, busses which are now a common occurrence.

It is also a fact that there is a parallel industry functioning in may part of India these are specialized in repairing the nonrepairable vehicles. One vehicle will be called nonrepairable not only if the vehicle cannot be repaired roadworthy but also if the repair is not economical. The so-called repairers make the vehicle look only roadworthy by performing cosmetically repairs and use substandard spare parts to make it economical and these vehicles are being sold across India and becoming a threat to road and passenger safety.

We need to change our mindset towards road safety and passenger safety and take it as a very serious and non-negotiable clause that needs to be met with. Programs that involve repaired vehicle safety assessment which includes the setting up of safety standards and parameters that need to be met with religiously or penalized if tampered with.

Through measures like well-documented criterions for road safety and meticulous and regular checkups for the same, we can cut down the now massive road accident toll to a very large extent. Steps need to be undertaken in this context to make it a reality and the auto industry needs to work towards adhering to these specifications with no room for compromise or cutbacks.
